Periodic Poundage Update - COVID-19
It has been three weeks since my last periodic poundage update and a lot has changed in that time. When I originally wrote that post I knew I wouldn’t be able to exercise much since I had just undergone double hernia surgery. My goal was to try and eat right (and less) to kick start the weight loss goals that way when I was finally able to get back to exercising I would be able to drop weight fast.
That seems like a completely different world. Now we are all stuck together. Schools - closed. Restaurants - closed. Offices - closed. No one can really get out in the world. It seems like a faint memory of the time I was able to kiss Rizzo and Q off to school then drop Cece off at the bus before going back to the comfort of my home office for some peace and quiet while getting work done.
I know I’m not the only one and I’m lucky that I was already set up to work from home. That is a whole different discussion but the point as it relates to this post is that the world is topsy turvey so everything that I had hoped and planned to do has gone out the window.
I haven’t tracked a single thing in Weight Watchers. I’m trying to eat right but it isn’t as easy to eat right when you are just trying to eat what you have on hand. We still have lots of fruit and vegetables in the house but we also have lots of bread for a daily sandwich at lunch.
Our house is also trying to support the local businesses by “eating out” for dinner during the weekend. Cece’s favorite place to go to eat is Ted’s Bulletin in order to get the Mr. Breakfast. She actually calls it Mr. Pancake because it consists of a pancake the size of her head with bacon, eggs, and fruit. So, that is what we ordered on Friday night and I had a burger with peanut butter, jelly, and bacon. It was amazing!
Saturday night we support our favorite local sushi place, Red Kimono in downtown Herndon. Cece, Rizzo and Q both gobble down sushi like it was made of happiness. I can tolerate a spicy tuna roll as long as the spicy part of the roll covers up any of the tuna or other fish flavors. I don’t like fish. That doesn’t matter much at Red Kimono as they have amazing ramin. Not the ramin you ate in college when you were poor and needed a quick meal. This is the real deal and it is delicious.
Sunday night was another one of our local favorites, Red’s Table. We’ve been to Red’s for multiple event meals (Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, birthdays, etc.). They have a great beer list, a great wine list, and amazing food. Everything on the menu there is delicious especially the Crispy Fried Chicken Sandwich which is my go-to meal.
On top of that, I found myself drinking a bit more of adult beverages than I usually would. Don’t worry, I’m not pounding shots of tequila or sucking up 6 beers a night. However, supporting local businesses not only means restaurants but also breweries and wineries. We picked up a growler from Black Hoof Brewing Company in Leesburg, VA; a four-pack of beers from Twinpanzee Brewing in Sterling, VA; and six bottles of wine from Paradise Springs Winery in Clifton, VA were delivered right to our front door. Not to mention the beer-of-the-month club that Rizzo got me for my birthday (more on that in another post). So, with all this support to the community (and living with two small kids driving us out of our mind) we were having a few more adult beverages.
All that being said, there were some positives to the situation. I may have been eating or drinking more, but I was also walking more. Currently, my workouts can only consist of going for walks. I get in a 45 minute to an hour walk three times a week. That isn’t too bad and I hope to start some intervals next week with some light jogging.
On top of those walks, we take a family walk everyday at 4pm to get out of the house. We need to stretch our legs, get some fresh air, and get away from the constant barrage of life. Oftentimes that will include me hoisting a kid up on my shoulders to carry around for half a mile or so. All said, I’m probably walking more now than I have in a long time.
I’m also not out in the world visiting clients. So I don’t have the opportunity to pop into a coffee shop for a coffee and a blueberry muffin. I’m not sliding into 7-Eleven to grab a Mountain Dew and a donut.
The result is that I actually lost weight while staying at home and eating more at home. The last time I checked in I was 225.6 lbs. Since then, I’ve lost 2.4 lbs bringing me down to 223.2, which represents 1.1% of my total weight since starting. This isn’t much, but considering the world we live in right now I’m pretty excited to have lost anything at all. Now hopefully I can keep it up as I add in more exercise.
Stay safe and stay healthy out there.
